Wednesday the 18th: Richmond, Virginia
Arrived in the city yesterday afternoon and spent a little while driving around the Virginia Commonwealth University campus and the downtown area. Things have really grown and changed...some for the better, some for the worse. The last time we visited here was about five years ago!

VCU is where we both went to school for our BFA and where we met. After graduation, we moved up to Boston together, eventually got married and worked in the design world for over six years.

It was great to see the city and University thriving. One thing that had not changed was the humidity, with us even breaking a sweat in the middle of October!

The city skyline:

Elizabeth's aunt and uncle had us at their lovely home for a couple of days. It was great to see them, their son Dan and their awesome dog Molly (pictured below).

Visited the ever-vibrant Carytown, west of the city and stopped in at World of Mirth, a really cool toy store for all ages.

Carytown is also home to the historic Byrd Theater, worth a look inside if you visit. From what we remember, on Fridays an organ would raise from the orchestra pit and an employee would play a quick tune before the movie started! Not sure if that's still the case...

Then it was off to the legendary Cafe Olé for lunch. They make the best burritos in town! It was the same place as six years ago, same good food and same furnishings.

After lunch, we stopped by Belle Isle via the suspended catwalk over the James River. Lots of good memories here...

On the island looking back at the city. In the distance, you can see the catwalk hanging below the bridge.

Later in the day we spent some time walking around the University, looking at some of the studios and work in the department we graduated from (Communication Arts and Design). It was great to see some of our professors and catch up a little...such wonderful people that had a big impact on our education and design philosophies.

One thing that caught us by surprise was that the letterpress we had worked on when we were in school had been moved to a classroom setting and is now a part of the curriculum. That was very exciting to see...it used to be in a small building off of the music department's property. Now it's front and center and used regularly...as it should be.

We spent many a day laying out posters on this press. So happy it's still being used by the students.

Some student and faculty work outside of the studio:

The glorious type cases:

Well, that's it. Tomorrow we'll be heading to Baltimore and we'll have one more post for when we arrive, along with some text that attempts to close this chapter in our lives as we'll be starting a new one in a few days...starting new jobs and finding a new place to live in a new city.

For those who have followed the site for a while, you may have noticed that we just changed the November section to be the Appendix. Since we never made it to November, we thought we'd instead share a list of our favorite things from the past five months. If you're interested, come back in a few days...we're hoping to have it up by the end of the weekend.
