Sunday the 2nd: Mitchell, South Dakota
On our way to the Badlands, we stopped at the Corn Palace. Guess you could call it folk art but it does have a kitch edge to it. Inside is a basketball stadium (which claims to be the Boston Garden of the Midwest) and a large gift shop. It was interesting to see it but one visit is all it takes. This year's theme was the Rodeo.

Probably the best thing about the Corn Palace is a little archive wall of layout sketches for previous facades. The ones below are early works by the artist Oscar Howe who created the artwork for the "palace" from 1948-1971. He was a true folk artist...some really cool stuff.

On Elizabeth's birth year, 1978, the entire theme for the corn palace was "the fine arts"....seems fitting.
